QPWS Naturally Queensland 2020 Master Plan
News - CARE News
Wednesday, 21 September 2011 14:25

QPWS have released a consultation draft: Naturally Queensland 2020, the Master Plan for protected areas, forests and wildlife.

The consultation period closes on 20 November 2011.

The Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) is charged with managing protected areas and forests, as well as the irreplaceable wildlife that lives alongside us and shares the environment we all depend on.

For the past 10 years the 2001 Master Plan for Queensland’s parks system has helped guide the way QPWS manages national parks to protect natural and cultural values.

From July until December 2011 the Master Plan is being updated to reflect the challenges and opportunities that QPWS will face over the next 10 years. It will address all aspects of QPWS business, including protected areas on land and sea, as well as forests and wildlife.

A consultation draft has been developed: Naturally Queensland 2020, the Master Plan for protected areas, forests and wildlife.

This draft can be downloaded from the following link the QPWS Park Master Plan Website

You are encouraged to comment to help set the scene for the future of protected areas, forests and wildlife in Queensland.

The consultation period will close on 20 November 2011.

Myrtle rust - Update - 19-May-2011
News - CARE News
Monday, 30 May 2011 13:31

DPI have released an update on the Myrtle Rust Situation.

From http://www.dpi.qld.gov.au/4790_19788.htm

Current situation as at 19 May 2011

Myrtle rust has been confirmed in the township of Urangan, Hervey Bay. Surveillance has been conducted at locations along the Fraser Coast, including Fraser Island, with no further infections found.

Myrtle rust has also been confirmed at the Brisbane Botanic Gardens, Mt Coot-tha. At least nine native species were found to be infected at the gardens with three new host species for Queensland found (Geraldton wax, shatterwood and crater ironwood).

Biosecurity Queensland has conducted surveillance at 652 sites in Queensland and has confirmed myrtle rust infections at 127 of these. To date, 59 host plant species have been identified and 896 public reports have been logged.

Public surveillance plays a vital role in determining how widespread the disease is in Queensland. To help us track the spread of the disease, we are particularly interested in reports of possible cases of myrtle rust from the following areas:

  • Southern Downs
  • Lockyer Valley
  • Somerset
  • South Burnett
  • North Burnett
  • Fraser Coast.

To report any suspected sightings, contact Biosecurity Queensland on 13 25 23. Do not attempt to remove or transport plants yourself.
